NASA's Massive IMAP Mission

On 30 November 2023,NASA's Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) successfully completed Key Decision Point D (KDP-D).This milestone allows the mission to move from development and design to assembly, testing and integration,NASA announced. As well, the launch date for the mission was moved from no sooner than February 2025,to a launch window of late April to late May 2025 to ensure the project team has adequate resources to address risks and technical complexities during system integration and testing.*IMAP is to fuction as a modern day cartographer and help us understand what happens when the solar wind, which is a constant stream of particles from the Sun,collides with materials from interstellar space. This will help researchers map the boundary of the heliosphere, the magnetic bubble created by the solar wind, and better understand how this bubble protects Earth from large amounts of harmful cosmic radiation (cosmic rays).Such radiation can threaten astronauts and technological systems.* The IMAP spacecraft is being built, and will be operated,by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel,Maryland.*The IMAP mission simaltaneously investigates two of the most important topics in Space Physics today-the acceleration of enrgetic particles and interaction of the solar wind with the interstellar medium. The mission is led by Principal Investigator Professor David McComas in the Space Physics at Princeton Group. The IMAP's 10 instruments provide the first comprehensive in-situ and remote global observations to discover the fundamental physical processes that control our solar system's evolving space environment.Among the Team's partners are NASA JPL-Caltech;Los Alamos National Laboratory;Imperial College London;Nagoya University,Japan;University of Central Lancashire;University of Bern,Switzerland;Massachussetts Institute of Technology;the Laboratory for Astrophysics and Space Physics,University of Colorado Boulder; and The University of Chicago.*Space Physics is defined as the study of natural phenomena that occur in our solar system.Specifically, the Sun,the particles and the radiation it creates, and how these affect the planets;the solar wind and its interaction with the Earth and near-Earth space (space weather).Another definition is that Space Physics is the study of plasmas as they occur naturally in the Earth's upper atmosphere (areonomy) and within the solar system.

About Ion Thruster Engines - physics

According to NASA,the most common propellant used in ion propulsion is the heavy neutral gas Xenon, which is easily ionized and has a high atomic mass, thus generating a desirable level of thrust when ions are accelerated. The thrusters work by using an electrical charge to accelerate ions from Xenon fuel to a speed 7-10 times the speed of chemical engines. An ion is defined as an atom or molecule that has gained or lost one of its valence eletrons, giving it a net positive or negative electrical charge. So it is a charged entity,as opposed to a neutral one.

About Quasi-moon 2023 FW13,Earth's Heretofore Secret Companion - revised

Space rock 2023 FW13,also referred to as a Quasi-moon,was detected on 28 March 2023 by the Pan-STARRS telescope at Haleakala,Maui,Hawaii.Pan-STARRS stands for "Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System."It consists of telescopes and cameras dedicated to detecting near-Earth celestial objects.2023 FW13 is believed to have been Earth's companion since about 100 BC and will continue to circle Earth,in the course of 2023 FW13's elliptical orbit around the Sun,until at least 1500 years from now,in around 3700 AD.Controlled not by Earth's gravity, but by the Sun's,it will not likely be a hazard to Earth, since it travels in a wide ellipse largely,if not entirely, beyond the influence of Earth's gravity.Gravitational control areas are called Hill spheres. It is unlikely that Quasi-moons are affected by Earth's gravity at all. Some Quasi-moons are possibly near-Earth asteroids. After being detected by Pan-STARRS,2023 FW13 was confirmed by a number of other telescopes. Then it was officially listed by the Minor Planet Center of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).2023 FW13 has an estimated diameter of only 30-50 ft/10-15 m.2023 FW13 will hopefully continue to be studied by scientists who can ascertain its composition. Quasi-moons are also called Quasi-satellites.Space rock 2016 HO3 was detected in April 2016.Light reflected by it was analyzed and the results suggest it is composed of the same material as the Moon rocks brought back by the Apollo missions. So it could be a fragment of the Moon. It's only in recent times that we've become aware of Earth's previously secret companions through increasingly rigorous sky surveys.

Meteorite Confirmed by The College of New Jersey and Expert Consultant

The object that slammed through the roof of a Hopwell Township,New Jersey home has been confirmed to be a stony chondrite meteorite by physicists of The College of New Jersey and their expert consultant. That means it is a piece of an asteroid that formed in the early solar system.Tests performed included visual examination;scanning electron microscope images;density measurements;and an expert assessment by Jerry Delaney,a retired meteorite expert from Rutgers University and the American Museum of Natural History in New York.* The Associated Press reported that the Physics Department Chairman,Nathan Magee, said that: the object is a true chondrite meteorite,in excellent condition, and one of a very small number of similar witnessed chondrite falls known to science.* Indeed, the space rock was still warm when the Kop family found it in a bedroom.A stony chondrite meteorite is one which has not been modified by either melting or differentiation of the parent body. They are formed when various types of dust and small grains in the early solar system accrete to form primitive asteroids.Embedded in the dust are presolar grains which predate the formation of the solar system and came from elsewhere in the Milky Way galaxy. The chondrules,or round grains, from which the meteorite gets its name were molten or partially molten droplets in space believed to have formed when a shock wave passed through the solar system, perhaps a shock wave from the gaseous disk that formed Jupiter,a recent study suggests.* These meteorites of asteroid origin date back more than 4.54 billion years. They are pieces of small to medium asteroids that were never part of a celestial object large enough to undergo melting and planetary differentiation.

More About the Possible Space Rock That Hit the New Jersey Home

So the Physics Department of The College of New Jersey is going to start the analysis of the suspected space rock that struck a home in Hopewell Township,Mercer County,New Jersey. They will examine it with an electron microscope. What could it be?It could be a piece of an asteroid or comet. It could even be a piece of the Moon or Mars.A few of the rarest meteorites can be worth millions of dollars. The family who owns the home owns the suspected space rock that damaged it.* Follow up testing could be conducted at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. It's up to the family who owns the object it how far they want to take the analysis. It is extremely rare for a space rock to damage a building.* Once a meteor strikes a planet or a moon,it is called a meteorite. The largest meteorites cause an impact crater.* The College of New Jersey is located in Ewing Township, adjacent to the state capital,Trenton. It was founded in 1855 and has over 7,000 students.

Lunar Explosion Bears Investigating

This blog would like a spacecraft to photograph the area where the lunar explosion occurred. We could possibly ascertain what kind of space rock hit the Moon. Was it a meteor or even a small asteroid?Exactly how large is the crater it left? The incident also indicates that there are some rare hazards associated with human exploration of a moon which has no atmosphere for celestial objects to burn up in. On the other hand, human explorers are far more at risk because of the lunar surface receiving radiation bombardment from cosmic rays, solar storms and and even gamma rays.It could be so intense, they could immediately fall ill with radiation sickness,a recent German study suggests.

FDA Grants Moderna/Merck Therapy Breakthrough Status

On 22 February 2023,Moderna and its partner Merck announced that Moderna's MRNA cancer vaccine MRNA-4517/V940 and Merck's Keytruda(R) cancer therapy have been granted breakthrough therapy status by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. That means the FDA will fast-track its review of the new combination therapy. The Moderna cancer vaccine, when administered with Merck's Keytruda(R) cancer therapy following complete surgical resection, prevented recurrence of advanced melanoma skin cancer (stage III/IV) in 44% of patients in a Phase 2b clinical trial.Preliminary breakthrough designations are given when evidence indicates that the product may demonstrate substantial improvement over available therapies on at least one clinically significant endpoint. The new therapy is given for the adjuvant (prevention of cancer returning) treatment of patients with high-risk melanoma following complete surgical resection (removal). The two companies are to begin a Phase 3 clinical trial of the novel therapy.Moderna and Merck want to investigate the new therapy as an adjuvant treatment for other forms of cancer, including non-small cell lung cancer.* Earlier, the FDA granted breakthrough status to Moderna's MRNA vaccine against respiratory syncitial virus (RSV) which proved highly effective (more than 80%) at preventing RSV in a clinical trial.RSV is a serious threat primarily to children younger than five and older adults.RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies. In the US,it kills an estimated 100-500 children a year and about 14,000 adults a year, but the estimate is suspected to be lowball.* Merck & Co Inc (MRK),Moderna Inc (MRNA)

About Palomar Observatory, a world class research center

Palomar Observatory is owned and operated by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and administered by the Caltech Optical Observatories. It is located atop Palomar Mountain in north San Diego County,California.Local businesses and communities are known to install shielded lighting to preserve the Observatory's viewshed. The Observatory was founded by George Ellery Hale (1868-1938),who was basically an early heliophysicist and discovered the Sun's magnetic fields.Hale oversaw the design, funding and construction of the 200 inch Hale Telescope for the rest of his life.Completed and named in his honor posthumously,it was the world's largest telescope for 45 years. He also played a leading role in the establishment of the Yerkes and Mount Wilson Observatories. Today, there are three active research telescopes at Palomar:the 200 in/5.1 m Hale Telescope;the 48 inch/1.21 m Samuel Oschin Telescope;and the 60 inch/1.5 m telescope. The latter two, plus a robotic camera, constitute the Zwicky Transient Facility, which is dedicated to the search for and sourcing of astronomical optical transients. It is a wide-scale sky optical survey.* Palomar is a world class center of astronomy and astrophysics research with astronomers and astrophysicists from Caltech and other domestic and international partners. It operates every clear night and is considered an iconic facility for scientific advancement;instrument development;and student training, the Observatory said.* Besides the three research telescopes, there are three instrumentation projects ongoing:Gattini IR,a near infrared transient survey project;PARVI,a star radial velocity measurement project;and the Next Generation Palomar Spectrograph (NGPS).Besides Caltech,Observatory associates include Yale University;NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory-Caltech;and the National Optical Observatories of China (NAOC).

About the Green Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF)

The Green Comet is green because its head contains diatomic carbon. This is a form of carbon molecule with two atoms of carbon each. When the comet draws near the Sun,the diatomic carbon gives off a green glow because of a chemical reaction with the solar wind.* The Green Comet is believed to have originated in the Oort Cloud. The Oort Cloud is a theoretical construct referring to the most distant area of the solar system. It is thought to contain icy celestial bodies such as comets. The Oort Cloud is far beyond Pluto. It is so far away,it is believed to be one quarter to one half the distance to the nearest star,Proxima Centauri. No spacecraft has ever visited the Oort Cloud.Indeed,Voyager I will need another 300 years to reach it.* The Green Comet will not return for 50,000 years. When it was last visible from Earth,Neanderthals co-existed with Cro-Magnon,or modern humans.
