See the Milky Way's Sagittarius A* black hole in an amazing polarized Event Horizon Telescope image - Space.com - astrophysics

A view of Sagittarius A*,the supermassive black hole at the centre of our Milky Way galaxy,is presented by the European Southern Observatory (ESO).It was taken by the Event Horizon Telescope,a global network of radio telescopes including one operated by ESO at Atacama,Chile. The new polarised image of Sgt A* is similar to the image of the supermassive black hole at the centre of the M87 galaxy because they both have strong magnetic fields.Despite what the video says,Sagittarius A* is in a quiescent mode now,not eating much of anything.Credits:ESO,University of Arizona

2024 Total Solar Eclipse News Conference

The Parker Solar Probe will get very close to the sun and gather data on the eclipse never possible before.A NASA WB-40 aircraft will also gatger unique data as it chases the eclpse, getting an extra two minutes of totality.Astronauts aboard the ISS will gather data from a unique perspective, seeing the shadow of the Moon on the Earth.A NOAA satellite will study the effect of the eclipse on the ionosphere. An eclipse was used to confirm Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity by observing gravitational lensing, the bending of starlight around the curvature of spacetime.NASA TV will provide live coverage of the eclipse from 1-4 pm EDT on 8 April 2004 and this blog intends to cover it.If you can't watch it live, you should be able to see a recorded version of it as well later on.

Hubble’s Inside The Image: Abell 2744 - NASA Goddard - astrophysics

Because of the intense gravity exerted by galaxy cluster Abell 2744,gravitational lensing, which is a curvature of space, occurs as predicted by Albert Einstein and we are able to look back in time at galaxies in the early universe about 12 billion light years away. The universe is about 13.8 billion years old.Galaxy cluster Abell 2744 also contains dark matter.

Using Infrared Light to Survey the Milky Way Galaxy - NASA Goddard - cosmology

Studying our own galaxy is surprisingly difficult.First, because the Milky Way covers such a large portion of the sky that studying it can take a very long time;and second, because Astromomers must peer through thick dust that obscures distant starlight.Infrared light can pass through that dust and is a key tool for learning about the far side of our galaxy. Cosmology is the study of the origin and structures of the universe.

NASA Science Live: Our First Commercial Science Delivery to the Moon - Lunar Science

Intuitive Machines Inc (LUNR) hosted by Tahira Allen Dr.Sue Lederer CLPS Project Scientist Dr.Debra Needham CLPS Program Scientist The mission was largely a scientific success, including the first ever radio telescope on the Moon, which gathered data both in transit to the Moon and on the lunar surface. The instrument which didn't work right was the Plume Surface Studies, whose goal was to image the engine exhaust plume as it churned up dust on the lunar surface. Its secondary goal was to image the exposed fresh surface below the lander throughout the lunar day for science investigations. It wasn't able to collect data on descent this time, but we were able to test it in space,as well as after landing to help prepare for its next mission, which will be on the Firefly spacecraft.
