Hubble Finds New Evidence for Intermediate-Mass Black Hole in Omega Centauri - YouTube - NASA Goddard - astrophysics
Intermdiate-mass black holes are a long sought missing link in black hole evolution. They are smaller than supermassive black holes, but larger than stellar mass black holes, formed by the collapse of massive stars.Only a few candidates have been found to date.*A team astronomers analyzed over 500 images from 20 years of NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope observations to find evidence of an intermediate-range blsck hole by tracking seven fast-moving starsin Omega Centauri. The Omega Cantauri globular cluster is in the constellarion Centaurus at a distabce of 17,090 light years from Earth. It is the largest-known globular cluster in our Milky Way galaxy at a diameter of about 150 light years.*Text by NASA/Goddard and edited by Andrew Taylor

Milky Way's core is 'venting' - Chandra X-ray Telescope sees it! - YouTube - Space.com - cosmology
Using the Chandra X-ray Telescope, scientists have discovered a chimney and exhaust vent 26,000 light years from Earth. The structures are in the center of the Milky Way and perpendicular to its spiral arms.Exhaust from the Milky Way's centrally located supermassive black hole,Saggitarius A*/Sgr A*,may be behind the formation of these structures and other massive galactic structures.*Cosmology is the study of the origin of the universe and its structures.

See the Milky Way's Sagittarius A* black hole in an amazing polarized Event Horizon Telescope image - Space.com - astrophysics
A view of Sagittarius A*,the supermassive black hole at the centre of our Milky Way galaxy,is presented by the European Southern Observatory (ESO).It was taken by the Event Horizon Telescope,a global network of radio telescopes including one operated by ESO at Atacama,Chile. The new polarised image of Sgt A* is similar to the image of the supermassive black hole at the centre of the M87 galaxy because they both have strong magnetic fields.Despite what the video says,Sagittarius A* is in a quiescent mode now,not eating much of anything.Credits:ESO,University of Arizona

Milky Way's black hole may be spinning 'football-shaped' spacetime warp - astrophysics
Studies of the supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way,Sgr A*,were made using the NASA Chandra X-ray Observatory and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Very Large Array,an array of radio telescopes in New Mexico.
The singularity of a black hole was predicted by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, yet was never confirmed by observation in his lifetime.A singularity has zero volume yet infinite density, hence it bends spacetime to an infinite extent. As you approach a singularity, time slows down from an observer's point of view, but not from the one being observed's point of view (relativity). It slows down so much it virtually stops, with one minute being approximately 1,700,000 years long. This is experienced by astronauts in low Earth orbit to a minor extent because the Earth's large mass causes ripples in spacetime.Even light, which has no mass, must follow the curvature of space in the presence of a black hole.Hence astronomers detected X-ray flashes on the opposite side of a black hole, confirming Einstein's theory yet again.

Meteorite Confirmed by The College of New Jersey and Expert Consultant
The object that slammed through the roof of a Hopwell Township,New Jersey home has been confirmed to be a stony chondrite meteorite by physicists of The College of New Jersey and their expert consultant. That means it is a piece of an asteroid that formed in the early solar system.Tests performed included visual examination;scanning electron microscope images;density measurements;and an expert assessment by Jerry Delaney,a retired meteorite expert from Rutgers University and the American Museum of Natural History in New York.*
The Associated Press reported that the Physics Department Chairman,Nathan Magee, said that:
the object is a true chondrite meteorite,in excellent condition, and one of a very small number of similar witnessed chondrite falls known to science.*
Indeed, the space rock was still warm when the Kop family found it in a bedroom.A stony chondrite meteorite is one which has not been modified by either melting or differentiation of the parent body. They are formed when various types of dust and small grains in the early solar system accrete to form primitive asteroids.Embedded in the dust are presolar grains which predate the formation of the solar system and came from elsewhere in the Milky Way galaxy. The chondrules,or round grains, from which the meteorite gets its name were molten or partially molten droplets in space believed to have formed when a shock wave passed through the solar system, perhaps a shock wave from the gaseous disk that formed Jupiter,a recent study suggests.*
These meteorites of asteroid origin date back more than 4.54 billion years. They are pieces of small to medium asteroids that were never part of a celestial object large enough to undergo melting and planetary differentiation.

Astrophysics:New Explorer Mission Selected
NASA has selected as its next Explorer mission the Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe,Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx).The longest-running series of NASA missions, the Astrophysics Explorer Program began with Explorer I in 1958 and ran through the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) in 1989,until now it has totaled more than 90 missions to its credit.Explorer provides frequent,low-cost access to space in support of the Astrophysics and Heliophysics programs in NASA's Science Mission Directorate.*
According to NASA,SPHEREx addresses two basic questions:
1.how the universe evolved;and
2.how common the ingredients for life are in the Milky Way.It will probe the nature of physics that drove cosmic inflation in the early universe;determine the properties of interstellar ices,a key reservoir for water and biogenic material in the early phases of star and planet formation;and the cosmic history of galaxy formation.
SPHEREx will study the sky in both optical and near-infrared wavelengths, gathering data on over 300 million galaxies and more than 100 million stars,as well as our own Milky Way.Surveying the entire sky every six months,it will create the highest resolution colour all-sky map to date,in 96 colour bands. In the process of its work, the satellite will identify targets for further study by such missions as the James Webb Space Telescope and Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope. In the Milky Way,it will seek out water and organic molecules in stellar nurseries, where stars are born of gas and dust,as well as in planetary disks around stars, where new planets may form.*
Ball Aerospace,a subsidiary of Ball Corporation,is building the spacecraft and integrating the mission.James Bock of Caltech is principal investigator and the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory is mission manager. The spacecraft is slated for a 2023 launch.*
Ball Corporation, perhaps best known for its former line of canning jars, provides innovative, sustainable packaging solutions for beverage, personal care and household products customers;as well as aerospace and other technology and services primarily for the U.S. Government, the company says.*
