HP was spun off from Hewlett-Packard to sell personal computers, printers, ink and toner, being the leader in the desktop printing industry. Now HP wants to enter the higher growth market for large A3 printer-copier combinations. These devices are geared toward high volume office work group customers.HP is paying 1.05 billion dollars for Samsung's A3 business and thousands of patents.*
Besides the A3 line of business,HP will acquire the ability to manufacture essential mechanisms within laser printers,so they won't have to buy them from other firms anymore.Control of this core technology will help HP to shape the evolution of its laser printers,as well as raise its profit margins.*
The deal brings with it to HP more than 6500 Samsung printing patents and 6,000 Samsung employees-among them, about 1500 engineers.*

Prospects in Energy and Tech
The Permian Basin is an energy-rich sedimentary formation primarily in West Texas and Southeast New Mexico.Permian Basin shale oil is said to be second only to Saudi Arabia.Pioneer Energy is the Permian, said CNBC host Jim Cramer.EOG Resources is there, too, and so is Cemerex Energy.

IBM and CISCO also buy into artificial intelligence, while Intel is now into wearable tech and robotics.3-D imagery and artificial intelligence are disruptive.
Intel has raised its guidance and was upgraded by Morgan Stanley.Intel's going right to 40.Business is much stronger, the yield's still three and change. We have a leader in old tech. You have to dust off the old playbook of what to do when Intel gets it right. The engineers are in charge-a 100% change in leadership. They are in gaming;they are in mobile.Look out,Samsung.*

Weathering Change:Hewlett-Packard CEO Confident
The shift to mobile devices and cloud computing have had a substantial impact on the financial health of legacy technology companies such as Hewlett-Packard.
We had a very good quarter, said Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman. In fact, our operating margins were up.We think we're gonna have a couple more good quarters.I remain confident in the future of Hewltt-Packard.
Neither PCs nor printers have disappeared. We've been able to stem the decline in our legacy businesses.Any acquisitions we make are likely to be small to medium-sized,directly aligned to our strategy.
After this restructuring program, then we have to build productivity and efficiency into the DNA of Hewlett-Packard.We will build that into our operations. There will be no more big restructurings. The good news is,the rate of decline has slowed dramatically. My view is,the turnaround is right on track.
We need to make scale work to our advantsge. The business will rebound in the years ahead,Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman predicted.
Upon further review,it is totally clear the turnaround is working, agreed CNBC host Jim Cramer.
There has been a 39% climb in share price since Whitman took the reins at HP in 2011,although the company's sales have been declining the past few years. She is making up to 16,000 more job cuts to lower costs,as well as the 34,000 that were previously announced.

Tupperware Brands;Cramer Comments
Thr US middle class is challenged, not dead, according to Rick Goings,CEO of Tupperware Brands. We're seeing individuals more interested in entrepreneurial activity. Our recruiting for sales force is up.There is hope for the future in the US and Europe, which are about 5% each of our business.
The emerging middle class is gonna grow by a billion people in the next 5-6 years, and women are looking for an opportunity. There are limited earning opportunities for women in retail.
We send a managing director from that country in.She plugs our model in.It works. The sales consultant moved from lower to middle class. She had better relations with her family.
India has been growing double digit. We've been growing 30% in Brazil the last five years. It's the power of women.Men generally can't multitask;women can, said Tupperware CEO Rick Goings.
Tupperware stock closed at 91.73 in Monday trading,up 0.31%.*
I heard a lot of buzz in San Francisco about Meg Whitman and Hewlett-Packard,said CNBC author and analyst Jim Cramer.Meg Whitman is trying very hard to reinvent that company, and I have to say,I think she's succeeding.
Amazon is revered out there. They are fabulous.*
The Emirates is spending 300 million for GE engines.GE's becoming a manufacturer again with a tail of finance, rather than having a dog of finance.*
Elon Musk does seem very confident about Tesla Motors.Hey look,I want one.I wouldn't be dissuaded by the fire risk.*
Whirlpool basically did nothing for a decade.I like Whirlpool now.I don't want to sell Whirlpool.*
No one's talking about giving Twitter money yet.Just in terms of getting in touch with your customers, people seem to favour Facebook. They like to monitor what people are saying about their company on Twitter,Jim Cramer pointed out on CNBC's Squawk On The Street program.*

The Navy Yard Massacre:D.C. Doctor Pleads For Change
This is not America, said an emotional Dr.Janis Orlowski,Chief Medical Officer at Medstar Washington Hospital Center, which was treating victims of the Navy Yard Massacre Monday in the nation's capital. This is not Washington,D.C.We've got to work to get rid of this. This is not good.
The visibly shaken trauma expert has clearly had it with American gun violence.
Dr.Orlowski noted that military physicians train at the urban hospital to sharpen thier gunshot wound skills before heading for war zones. There's something evil about this violence, she lamented. We've got to help each other to overcome it.I wish our doctors weren't so good at this.I'd rather they spent their time treating something else.*
An African American ex-Navy Sailor with a history of anger management issues and firearms violations,Aaron Alexis,34,was solely responsible for the rampage, police now believe. He had been treated by Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals for psychiatric problems, which, according to a 2004 police report, his father believed originated from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder acquired when he helped rescue victims of the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center in Manhattan. In 2004,Alexis shot out the tires of construction workers he had a dispute with.In 2010,he fired a gun through the floor of a neighbour he was quarreling with.*
This violent, quarrelsome side was in stark contrast with the helpful, quiet and studious New York native with a fascination with Asain culture that friends say they knew.He served in the Navy Reserves from 2007-11 as an Aviation Electrician's Mate, but was discharged for a pattern of misconduct.Recently he worked as a computer refresher for a Hewlett-Packard subcontractor that did work at the Washington Navy Yard, which he was authorised to enter.

The Hewlett-Packard Shakeup-will it be enough
The Chairman of tech titan Hewlett-Packard,Ray Lane, has resigned along with two board members in an effort to clear the decks for CEO Meg Whitman's turnaround effort.Lane will stay on as a director, and activist investor Ralph Whitworth will assume the Chairman's role.
The Chairman runs the board, while the CEO runs the company.
The company is trying to recover from several disastrous moves in recent years, such as the botched acquisition of UK firm Autonomy and the unsuccessful tenure of Leo Apotheker as CEO.
We really want to see more fundamental changes in the board, said Anne Simpson,Senior Portfolio Manager and Director For Corporate Governance of CalPERS,the California Public Employee Retirement System,a major HP shareholder. We still don't think it's possible to take that fresh look that's needed.
This is chapter one in the new playbook for Hewlett-Packard.Think about the role of the auditor. You really need to be thinking about fresh eyes for the audit.Ralph Whitworth is stepping in to find the permanent Chairman. This is not Ralph's role. He's a catalyst, and that's a very important thing when a board has got itself into trouble.
We need a board that will stick around and back the new strategy.Shareholders now have the ability to intervene directly if the board doesn't succeed, and that's very important,Ms.Simpson pointed out.
CEO Meg Whitman unveiled the company's new Moonshot server on Monday,a super-dense server for hyperscale data centers and an attempt to find a product that will make up for declining PC sales.
RBC Capital Markets is maintaining its sector perform rating on the stock.

Will Hewlett-Packard Have a Happy New Year
Hewlett-Packard's Elite Pad is focused on the enterprise, said Todd Bradley,Executive Vice President of HP's Printing and Personal Systems Group. It is built on a Microsoft platform with manageability and security in mind, starting at the enterprise and letting it come down to the consumer.
Clearly the global market is changing. Our ability to innovate in hardware, software and design will help us stand out and sell to both consumers and enterprise.
The activity at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas was pretty robust. There was a lot of focus on touch and Windows 8.
HP will roll out new high speed ink products later this year. There will be eprint, which goes from a mobile device anywhere in the world to the printer you choose.
Christmas was good for HP.The transition to both online and in-store shopping is taking place all over the world and is converging.
In after hours trading Monday,HP shares were at 17.00,up 0.84%.

Should You Buy Hewlett-Packard Shares
Hewlett-Packard reported mixed Q2 results, beating estimates on earnings,or profit, but missing estimates on revenue,or sales. The PC group was particularly weak on revenue. They have to transform their business model, said David Pearl,Chief Investment Officer at Epoch Investments. It wants to look a little more like IBM.
The stock is very cheap, but they have a lot of transformation to do in their business. It's gonna be a multi-year process.
Shaw Wu,Senior Research Analyst at Sterne Agee, said we like this stock. We have a buy rating on it.They're actually very profitable. We think they're in the best position for a turnaround. They have about a 30% exposure to the PC market. Our price target for the stock is 33.00.
HP CEO Meg Whitman indicated they may sell some of their smaller businesses. They will defend their PC business by bringing down prices through bringing down the cost of making them.
HP is competing with China's Lenovo in the PC space.
Shaw Wu was recently ranked #2 for stock picking and #3 for accuracy by StarMine. He has a BS in Finance and Information Systems from New York University's Stern School of Business.Sterne Agee is a brokerage, advisory and trust company with offices nationwide. It was founded in 1901.

What HP Needs From Meg Whitman
Despite beating estimates for both sales and profit,Hewlett-Packard posted an outlook for 2012 below what they were looking for.The pc business was down 2% in Q3,and printing was off about 10%.It looks like the company is resetting the bar, says analyst Aaron Rakers,CFA,Managing Director at Stifel Nicolaus.A lot of downward revisions have already been baked into the stock, and people are hopeful for upward revisions now.
Under new CEO Meg Whitman, the company is keeping the pc business and its economies of scale, leveraging the volume of what the pc business brings.Job One for Meg Whitman is resetting expectations. She must also bring cohesiveness to HP's management team.
Mr.Rakers is neutral on the stock. In order to upgrade it,he needs to feel comfort with the various competitive dynamics across HP's business segments.
Meg Whitman replaced Leo Apotheker in the top job at the firm. She had been CEO of eBay and a candidate in the 2010 California governor's race.

Hewlett-Packard and The Rise of Big Data
Untold amounts of information,or big data,is cascading into corporate storage every day.Big data is a pretty dramatic change for the software industry, according to Ann Winblad of the venture capital firm Hummer Winblad Venture Partners.Ninety percent of the world's data has been produced in the last two years. All of the companies have to find ways to process and organize big data.
Hewlett-Packard is getting into the business by paying 10.3 billion dollars for big data specialist Autonomy Corp,PLC.These big data experts are high gross margin businesses.Facebook is big data. These are big stakes,to own this software stack.
The most robust area for venture capital was software.Where there are changes, innovators come to the rescue of the incumbents.Without new tools, you cannot use big data. We're funding a number of start-ups that are developing tools to use this data, and there is a strong market for them,Ms.Winblad ascertained.
Autonomy, the HP acquisition target,is a British-listed firm that was founded in 1996.It offers an infrastructure platform for understanding human-friendly data. Its meaning-based computing recognizes patterns and concepts in email, documents, videos, phone calls, and so on,with applications in such fields as governance and marketing.Eighty percent of such data went unused in the past.
In the U.S.,Autonomy Corp,PLC trades on the over the counter pink sheets under the ticker symbol AUTNF.

The Big Shift:Hewlett-Packard's Bet
CEO Leo Apotheker(pronounced "Ahpotayker")is moving Hewlett-Packard to an IBM model of software and services, says Scott Kessler, head of tech research at Standard&Poor's.It's gonna be uphill. It's gonna be very difficult to sell the pc business. Can they really be competitive in software?
HP is saying they don't want to be in pcs, tablets or smartphones. They are selling the Web OS operating system.HP is known at its core for its printer business. It's really gonna be a challenge to unload that.
This really is a sea change in tech.Google is getting into hardware, while HP is leaving it.These moves will have impacts for years to come, although attention has been focused on the financial markets recently,Mr.Kessler observed.
Carly Fiorina, who led HP from 1999-2005,thinks the current board has a lot of diverse experience and luminaries from the Silicon Valley. The board made a serious and substantial decision about the future.HP is a company with a very deep core competency in managing complexity.
HP is the largest tech company in the world, with more than 100,000 employees. The CEO is never the company;he is the leader of the company. It's all about the people and the systems and the culture of the company.Preparing a company for the future sometimes requires making a big bet.HP has been buying software companies. This isn't a totally new development, but they're making a big bet on unstructured data.
It's up to the people at HP to explain this and make it work.Anytime the stock drops like that,it places pressure on people-there's no question. They are doubling down in the enterprise space, former CEO Carly Fiorina pointed out.
UBS has cut its rating on HP from buy to neutral, lowering its price target to 26.00.

Asia This Day
FoxConn,a major outsourcer for Apple,Hewlett-Packard and Sony, has suffered a tragic fire and explosion in Chengdu,China.Three workers were killed. All operations at that plant and similar plants were shut down.
Computers are assembled at the stricken facility.iPad and iPhone production may also be hindered by the blast in a dust duct there, which caused smoke to billow from the plant.
FoxConn is based in Taipei,Taiwan. It was plagued by a rash of worker suicides last year.
Elsewhere in Asia,Thailand's GDP growth has exceeded expectations. It grew 3.0% on the year. The growth is being attributed to very strong exports,as well as robust domestic demand.
Asian markets were lower today,Monday,on account of fears about European debt and a Chinese regulator's call for better risk management by banks.
Hong Kong saw a temperature of 73F under mostly cloudy skies, with thunderstorms in the forecast.

New Hewlett-Packard CEO Leo Apotheker(pronounced "Ahpotayker") has added five new members to the company's board. They are:
Meg Whitman,former CEO of eBay;
Patricia Russo,former CEO of Alcatel-Lucent;
Shumeet Banerji,CEO of Booz&Company;
Gary Reiner,former Chief Information Officer at General Electric and now a special advisor to General Atlantic;
