Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly,53,will undergo cancer surgery today,June 7,to remove part of his upper right jaw.He has a squamous cell carcinoma,a type of skin cancer that can form in the jaw bone.Surgery is typically indicated when the cancer is discovered at an early stage.
More than 90% of oral cancers are squamous cell carcinomas.Squamous cells are the lining of the throat and mouth. Some of them may become abnormal,or cancerous.
About 80% of oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancers are linked to heavy alcohol use;70% are linked to tobacco use, either smoking or chewing tobacco;25% are linked to human papilloma virus, which also causes cervical cancer.Heredity may also be a factor.
Following removal of the tumor, surgical reconstruction of the oral cavity and implanting of a prosthetic device may be required to assist with speaking, chewing and smiling.
Oral cancer screening is painless and may be performed by a dentist as part of a regular dental exam.
Jim Kelly said he is doing his best to keep his spirits up in the face of his diagnosis. So far, there is no evidence the tumour has spread.
Kelly led the Buffalo Bills to four straight Super Bowls from 1991-94,and was a four-time Pro Bowl all star.He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002,as soon as he was eligible.Today he runs a football camp for children and hosts a charity golf tournament every year, which he intends to do this year even with his health condition.
Update:Jim Kelly is recovering comfortably following surgery at Erie County Medical Center, his doctors said in a statement. He underwent a partial maxillectomy,or removal of the jaw bone,to remove a squamous cell carcinoma of the upper gingival caused by chronic irritation at the gum site.He underwent reconstruction with a dental obturator,or prosthetic plate.
The surgery went very well.We are hopeful for and anticipate a speedy recovery and successful outcome, his doctors concluded.

Who Sings on the Budweiser Super Bowl Commercial
The song on this beer commercial, which is still being run,is actually a mash-up of three different layers of music. The base of it is The Cult's 1985 hit "She Sells Sanctuary."On top of that is rapper Flo Rida's remix of Avicii's track "Good Feeling."That constitutes the other two layers of music, and is called "Flo Rida-Good Feeling Remix featuring Avicii."All of this music is available separately,as well as in the mash-up form,on YouTube.Surely it is one of the more complex audio productions to ever back a TV commercial. The commercial itself includes historical allusions to the end of Prohibition and the Apollo astronauts on the moon.
The mash-up is controversial. Many of The Cult's fans detest it.You don't even hear Ian Astbury's vocals on the mash-up.The only voice you hear is Flo Rida's.Generally, however, the commercial has gotten a positive response for its innovative character and catchy music, bolstering Budweiser's reputation as a good times beverage.

NFL Legend Dies Frustrated With His Own Body
NFL legend Bubba Smith, who died August 3 at his Los Angeles home, was apparently dissatisfied with his weight.According to the Los Angeles County Coroner,Smith had high levels of the diet drug phentermine in his system. This, along with poor cardiovascular health in the form of high blood pressure and clogged blood vessels, contributed to his death at age 66,found by a caretaker.
At 6-foot-7 and 280 pounds,Smith was one of the original NFL big men.He played for the Baltimore Colts from 1967-72,helping them win Super Bowl V over the Dallas Cowboys in 1971.He was an all-star in the Pro Bowl in 1970 and 71.Smith later played for the Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers, retiring with a knee injury in 1976.
Following football, the gentle giant of Baltimore was very successful in Hollywood, excelling in the "Police Academy" film series as Officer Moses Hightower. He also appeared in popular T.V. series such as "Charlie's Angels" and "Married With Children."
I personally encountered Smith at the Baltimore Colts training camp in Westminster,Maryland when he signed autographs for my younger brother and myself. He was sitting alone outside one of the campus buildings in casual clothes and black horn-rimmed glasses. With his goatee and glasses,he looked more like a professor to me than a star athlete.Going over his photos, note that he kept his facial hair in various styles at different points in his life-including cleanshaven.
Smith had indeed received a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from Michigan State, where he was an All-American football star.
Bubba, you will always be warmly remembered by your many sports and cinema fans.

Dick Vermeil On Stress
Retired football coach Dick Vermeil,73,has been offering some advice to Type A personalities. The leave of absence of Florida coach Urban Meyer on account of stress-induced chest pains has highlighted the effects of stress in a very bold way, making Coach Vermeil's insights especially relevant:
1.Don't let your passion become your obsession.
2.You have to delegate.
3.You have to let others do what you do well.
4.Realize when you can get away, even if only for 25-30 minutes,to regroup. Many times, under pressure you're not making the right decisions.
5.You have to be yourself. If I'm offensive, they have to live with it.People appreciate you most if you're yourself.
6.I'd coach tomorrow if I were younger. It doesn't mean you can't be a good parent or grandparent. As I got older,I did a better job of balancing. You only have one chance,Dick Vermeil observed.
Coach Vermeil said he was glad Coach Meyer was taking a leave of absence, rather than resigning.Stress can be managed, the former coach of the Philadelphia Eagles,St.Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs explained.Mr.Vermeil has been married to Carolyn White since 1956.They are the parents of three and grandparents of eleven.Coach Vermeil was the first coach in the history of football to win both the Rose Bowl(1976)and Super Bowl(2000).He was portrayed in the 2006 film "Invincible" by Gary Kinnear.
