Frontiers in Medicine:USC's Stem Cell Center Opens Soon

On October 29,the Eli and Edythe Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at USC will open in Los Angeles. The 80 million dollar center, much of which was funded by the Broads' generous gift, will house up to 18 principal investigators and their research teams.
Consisting of 87,500 square feet on five stories, the center is characterized as an integral hub for stem cell research in Southern California by businessman and philanthropist Eli Broad(rhymes with "road").It is built to silver LEED standards-a mark of high environmental integrity-and will take its place alongside several other institutes on the USC Health Sciences Campus.
The center is led by Keck School of Medicine Professor Martin Pera,PhD,who describes its purpose as research aimed at the treatment of a vast spectrum of diseases. It will enable USC researchers and their colleagues to convert exciting fundamental discoveries into new therapies. The center focuses on liver disease;diabetes;heart, eye and blood diseases;as well as cancer.
Dr.Pera,a pharmacologist,is a graduate of George Washington University and Oxford University.Principal donor The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation supports progress in education, science and the arts.

Education Quality Affects Economy

According to noted businessman and philanthropist Eli Broad(rhymes with "road"),too many parents are satisfied with the status quo in education. We've got to get a greater awareness in the public. The business community gets it.We're number 19 in education. We used to be number 1.It's gonna affect their standard of living.
We need our great foundations to get more engaged in funding things our government is not willing to fund-or can't fund right now,in Mr.Broad's opinion.Mr.Broad and his wife Edythe have been major benefactors to UCLA,among other recipients. He is founder of SunAmerica and co-founder of KB Home.

USC's Medical Mecca

The University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine is a vast, world class system of institutions involved in education, research and patient care.It is a beehive of medical activity of all kinds. The underserved are cared for along with private patients.Research activities range from cancer studies to stem cell research. The latter is funded by noted businessman and philanthropist Eli Broad and his wife Edythe.
Keck's sprawling domain encompasses two private hospitals and a network of outpatient clinics staffed by USC doctors.Keck also partners with a number of other entities on medical facilities and programs. The range of its activity is so extensive,it's difficult to get your arms around at first.
USC is the largest private employer in Los Angeles. It brings more cash flow into the city than any other private institution or corporation.A magnet for foreign students,it is a co-founder of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities,a consortium of 42 leading research universities.USC employs about 3,000 full-time faculty and trains more than 900 medical residents. It has been recognized for its service to the surrounding communities by Time Magazine and the Princeton Review.

UCLA and Medicine

UCLA's new medical center is already counted among the world's best,Mr.Broad says. The university's medical and life sciences campuses have expanded tremendously in the past few years. They've got great people and a culture that promotes an astounding level of interdisciplinary collaboration,he notes. The Center of Regenerative Medicine & Stem Cell Research at UCLA also bears Mr.Broad's name.He is also effusive about the community beyond UCLA's boundaries. It's worth noting,to Mr.Broad's mind, that Los Angeles hosts a unique regional network of first-rate hospitals, research universities and biotech/biomedical enterprises that fill the horizon in every direction.
That sort of thing happens a lot around here,Mr.Broad muses.Almost without its knowledge or permission, the city of Los Angeles-the Original and Continuing Work In Progress-has become one of the world's great cities, headquarters of the Pacific and the leading exporter of ideas to the rest of the world.Yet if UCLA weren't here,Eli Broad speculates,he's not sure they'd have the intellectual capital they need to be the great city they are today.By concentrating his giving on UCLA,Mr.Broad has ensured his wealth will have a multi-generational impact for urban enhancement.

UCLA and the Arts

Businessman Eli Broad feels that UCLA probably has the best arts school in the country-a distinguished faculty with a student body to match.Could you have the best arts school just anywhere,Mr.Broad asks? No.Does the fact Los Angeles is home to the second largest number of professional artists in America have anything to do with that outcome? You bet,Mr.Broad asserts. The UCLA Art Center bears Eli Broad's name.He is a leading collector of modern art.

Eli Broad:Focused Philanthropist

Eli Broad, founder of SunAmerica and co-founder,with Kaufman,of KB Home, has found in University of California Los Angeles an institution that unites his interests in the visual arts, medical science and public education. To Mr.Broad's mind,UCLA is inextricably linked with Los Angeles.Which came first,UCLA or Los Angeles? Actually,Mr. Broad says,he has no idea. They're stuck together,co-dependent,inseparable.Why don't we just count our blessings, the businessman asks?
Everywhere you look at UCLA,Mr.Broad observes-engineering,architecture,law,performing arts, the B-school,the college-you're watching public education at its finest. You can witness the multiplication of knowledge. You can feel the engine operating at full throttle. You know you're at the center of gravity of this city,Mr.Broad stated.

The B in KB Home

Eli Broad, who built Sun America and sold it to AIG for 18 billion dollars U.S.,says he thinks some of the writedowns being taken by financial firms are excessive.Mr.Broad,who also co-founded KB Home(KB Home) with Kaufman, gave his perspective on the current situation. He's not sure we're in the final innings of the financial crisis. We may be in the middle innings.Housing has to stabilize before we can recover.Consumer confidence continues to sink, and he doesn't think that will change until next year.AIG stock could be a very attractive buying opportunity once things settle down,in Mr.Broad's opinion.

A Builder of Businesses

Eli Broad,a billionaire investor who, with his associates, owns a 4% stake(27 million shares) in American International Group(AIG),has been evaluating the company's prospects. He thinks new CEO Bob Willumstad is up for the job. He's met with him,and will meet with him again.Mr.Broad believes former CEO Martin Sullivan is a good man in commercial insurance, but AIG needs greater strength in finance and investment. It's going to get that soon.AIG's retirement and investment businesses have done well for it.The firm is manageable. It's a great franchise, with great core earning power,Mr.Broad said.
