Investing Ideas November 2014

Yum Brands, parent of Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut,has been upgraded from hold to buy at Janney Capital Markets, mainly on undervaluation. The firm got a new price target of 88.00 a share.*
Don't expect Apple Computer to go higher, according to Pacific Crest Securities. There is a potential lack of growth beyond the iPhone 6,and the iWatch and other products won't be able to make up for it.*
Lumber Liquidators was raised from equal weight to overweight at Morgan Stanley, with an 85.00 a share price target. The company has about 10% square footage growth and powerful store remodel/relocate benefits in its favour.Rising home prices and lower fuel costs should also help Lumber Liquidators.*
The low gas prices should also help big box retailers such as Target and Best Buy,says Stifel Nicolaus.Another plus is the strength of their online businesses alongside their brick and mortar stores.Wal-Mart has already seen share price appreciation from these factors.*

Trouble at SeaWorld and Independent Business;Walmart OK

SeaWorld's ebitda,or operating cash flow, was down 14-16%,and attendance came in below estimates. This is an astounding decline, said CNBC analyst Jim Cramer. This is just an abberation.I've never seen a complete collapse of ebitda.
This thing is just in trouble. The CNN documentary on SeaWorld must have played a role.*
The CNN documentary "Blackfish" covers the killing of a trainer by an orca at the Orlando,Florida SeaWorld in 2010.California is considering legislation to ban orca shows at amusement parks following the shocking incident. The company said it believes attendance in the quarter was impacted by demand pressure related to media attention surrounding proposed legislation in the state of California.*
If you're self-employed,your deductibles are out of control,Cramer observed. The cost of health care in this country is soaring with the Affordable Care Act.It's going to cost too much to have a baby-something to think about. This is what the companies involved in health and human services for independent business organisations are telling me.I don't mean to be political.Deductibles are flying high.*
Walmart has cut its full year forecast, but Raymond James analyst Budd Bugatch isn't too concerned.I feel pretty good about the report,Mr.Bugatcher said.Sales were better than expected.I think the costs were about health care, and a little bit about the economy as well. The new US CEO will take over an operation that is a pretty good operation.Returning growth to the core will be a key objective of his.
In the electronics area,Walmart has just gone through a project reboot. Our outperform rating is that investors with a large portfolio should overweight the stock and pay attention to it.*
Greg Foran is the new Walmart US CEO,having previously headed the company's Asia division. In a conference call,he told analysts that being in stock, clean stores and the right price were among his priorities.

Wal-Mart Stores:Focus and Future

Wal-Mart Stores has named Doug McMillon the next CEO of the world's largest retailer, replacing the retiring Mike Duke in January.Arkansas native McMillon,47,had worked his way up from unloading trucks at a warehouse to being head of Wal-Mart's international division as President and CEO of Wal-Mart International.
Mr.McMillon's position is a CEO training program, said analyst David Schisk of Stifel Nicolaus. He's had a taste of different opportunities and challenges. This appointment is very much expected. The CEO of Wal-Mart is essentially a major political job,on top of everything else.*
Wal-Mart needs to have a focus on being the best to their core customer. They don't have to take over the planet for growth's sake. It's a massive company. What we're seeing Wal-Mart and the entire industry focusing on is omnichannel, which is using your mobile phone to help you shop more efficiently.*
I think Wal-Mart is doing a better job of cooperating internationally, rather than competing, adds David Kelly of JP Morgan Asset Management. The working age population is declining in most of the developed world. You've got to be in the emerging markets, and in emerging markets beyond China-in Vietnam and Indonesia.*
Wal-Mart has done just that by acquiring a controlling stake in South African retailer Massmart.Massmart is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. It has about 290 stores in 14 countries, most of them in South Africa. It also manages 8 wholesale and retail chains, including Game;Dion;Makro;Shield;and CCW.
Founded in 1990,Massmart is Africa's third-largest distributor of consumer goods;the leading retailer of general merchandise, liquor and home improvement equipment and supplies;and the leading wholesaler of basic foods.
South Africa is a fast-growing market, but troubled by a high crime rate and unemployment.*

Where The Money Is,Mr.Executive

A frustrated Walmart executive reportedly asked where the money is,noting that February sales figures are a total disaster. One place the money is,is in people's gas tanks.Nationwide, gasoline prices are edging up to 4.00 a gallon-if they are not already there and beyond. It is the earliest in the year gas prices have been this high.Food prices are also running quite high.
Another important fact is,the payroll tax has been reinstated by Congress, and most people are making significantly less now-at least four figures less per year.Mr.Executive,that's where the money is.People are counting their pennies, and it's hurting Walmart sales.
It isn't just Walmart that's feeling the closed wallets, either. It's casual dining establishments;it's also the higher end Macy's department store,as well as Nordstrom and Kohl's.More and more retail stocks are deteriorating, according to Carter Worth,Chief Market Technician at Oppenheimer Asset Management.Americans are gonna start feeling this wherever they are on the income spectrum.
Gold prices have also been declining lately. This looks to be just beginning. This is a mess.I think we're going down to 1500.00 an ounce.Dan Nathan,co-founder of RiskReversal.com and a CNBC Options Action contributor, adds that the technicals make you want to stay away from gold right now.

Asia This Day:The Bangladesh Factory Fire;China's Big Auto Show

A garment factory belonging to the subsidiary of  the Tuba Group,a company that does business with Walmart,Carrefour and IKEA,burned to the ground near Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, killing at least 124 overtime workers. The eight storey building had no emergency exits or firescapes.
Thousands of onlookers, including family members, were restrained by police and soldiers.
The fire started in the first floor warehouse,a fire service official said.It then raced up the walls, trapping the workers, many of whom were burned beyond recognition. They had been making garments such as t-shirts,polo shirts and fleece jackets.
Several workers who escaped to the roof were rescued.Twelve who jumped out of windows died in hospital.
A Walmart spokesman said it was unclear whether the factory, which had been cited for safety violations, was still doing work for the world's largest retailer. In 2011,Walmart ceased doing business with 49 of Bangladesh's estimated 4500 garment factories because of fire safety violations. It was working with its suppliers to phase out production from such high risk buildings.
Bangladesh is located on the Bay of Bengal, between India and Myanmar. It is the world's largest clothing exporter.
The Guangzhou Auto Show is being held in China this week.China is the world's largest car market. Some 18.5 million cars were sold in China in 2011.Sales are expected to grow about 7% this year.
Volkswagen expects to become the world's largest automaker through its Chinese business, much of which is conducted with Chinese partners. While it will produce 1 million cars in Germany this year,VW will roll 2.7 million vehicles off its Chinese assembly lines.

Wal-Mart Tussles With Safeway

The Christmas shopping season isn't just significant for gift sellers;but for grocers as well.Wal-Mart,for instance, thinks it is so important that it took on Safeway in a newspaper circular.Wal-Mart claims that a comparable basket of non-meat/non-produce frequently purchased items is 25% less expensive at their stores than at Safeway's.
Wal-Mart says it compared the average national prices for 244 items at their respective stores every week beginning September 25.Besides this aggressive tactic,Wal-Mart is making a pledge to match any local competitor's price in a printed ad for an identical product.
On the other hand,Safeway offers considerable discounts to holders of its Club Card, which were probably not taken into account by Wal-Mart.The Safeway Club Card is free and is issued upon the filling out of a brief application.
In China,Wal-Mart is opening smaller stores to serve lower income small town and rural residents.

The Paring Knife:Wal-Mart Cuts Jobs

Wal-Mart,the largest U.S. and world employer,is cutting 10,000 more jobs from its Sam's Club division.Last week it cut 1200 jobs from Sam's Club customer recruitment ranks, saying it will turn to more targeted methods.Earlier in the month,it closed 10 Sam's Club stores, laying off 1500.The new job cuts are as a result of contracting with Shopper Events to handle sampling activities in the stores, which are considered crucial to warehouse store marketing. The total number of jobs cut from Sam's Club is 12,700.
Sam's Club has been trailing its competitors,Costco and BJ's Wholesale Club. Its sales declined last quarter, while parent Wal-Mart's sales increased.Typically, its customers have ended up buying well in excess of their actual needs. It's a habit many of them may be abandoning in the frugal atmosphere that prevails today.Samples staff will have a much harder sell under current conditions.
Some of the laid-off workers may be hired by Shopper Events.Others have been offered positions at Wal-Mart locations. This could limit the effect of the layoffs on local communities.Just how much the effect will be limited remains unclear, however.
