Fixing Voyager: How NASA Restored Communications with Voyager 1 from Across the Solar System - YouTube - solar system studies/interstellar studies

with Gregory Smith, communications and education directorate,NASA/JPL;Calla Colfield, media relations specialist,NASA/JPL;Kareem Badaruddin,Voyager mission manager;and Dr.Linda Spilker,Voyager project scientist*Both Voyager spacecraft are now in interstellar space, doing groundbreaking research on the interstellar medium.*The software engineering was needed to correct a hardware failure due to a part failure or cosmic radiation. There are five instruments on each Voyager that are still working:1.the magnetometer, measuring the intensity and direction of the magnetic field;2.the plasma wave detector, that actually measures the radio signals in space;3.the low energy charged particle instrument, measuring low energy cosmic rays, protons, electrons and molecules-it actually can step and measure in eight different directions;4.the plasma spectrometer, which measures the composition, temperature and density of the plasma in the interstellar medium;and 5.the cosmic ray spectrometer that measures the higher energy cosmic rays, the cosmic rays and particles coming from supernova explosions.

Cosmic coincidence leads NASA scientists to reconsider whether Uranus could support life - YouTube - Australian Broadcasting Corporation - planetary science/astrobiology

with Jamie Jasinski, plasma physicist at NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory-California Institute of Technology*After re-examining the Voyager 2 data,it's been ascertained that the Moons of Uranus could contain subsurface oceans like Jupiter's Moon Europa, possibly containing life.

Mission to Psyche: One Year Into the Spacecraft’s Journey to a Metal-Rich Asteroid - YouTube - solar system studies

All of Psyche's instruments are working:the magnetometer;the gamma ray spectrometer;the neutron spectrometer;the imagers;and the gravity experiment. The Hall thruster engine will be the first such engine used outside the Earth/Moon system. The Hall thruster is an ion thruster engine. An ion is an atom or molecule with an electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.Hall thrusters use a magnetic field to limit their electrons' axial motion and then use them to ionize propellant. The most common propellants used are Xenon and Krypton.Psyche could reveal some of the early history of the solar system. Some asteroids are believed to be planetesimals, chunks of material left over from the planet formation process. The definition of a planetesimal is a minute planet,a body that could or did come together with many others under gravitation to form a planet. *Credit:NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory-California Institute of Technology/ASU

Tour: Sagittarius A East - YouTube - astrophysics - NASA Chandra X-ray Observatory

Saggitarius A East (Sagt A East) was thought to have been a typical supernova explosion of a massive star. Now ,however, after a longer study with Chandra, astronomers have ascertained that,in fact,Sagt A East is actually where a white dwarf star exploded.White dwarfs are the shrunken stellar embers of a fuel-depleted star like our Sun that isn't large enough to supernova. The explosion is the result of thermonuclear reactions that travel quicky through a white dwarf when it pulls too much material from a companion star or merges with another white dwarf, causing the destruction of the white dwarf and a stunning flash of light.Explosions of a white dwarf are a crtitcal source of elements critical to life on Earth such as iron, nickel and chromium.Such elements are only created in the nuclear furnaces of stars or when stars explode.*Credit:NASA/Jet Propusion Laboratory-California Institute of Technology*Text by Chandra and edited by Andrew Taylor

Tour: Supernova 1987A Pulsar Wind Nebula - YouTube - astrophysics/cosmology

NuStar, the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array is a space observatory operated by NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory-California Institute of Technology. Its mission is to study the universe in high energy X-rays to better understand the dynamics of black holes, exploding stars and extreme active galaxies.Together with the NASA Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array,a network of 60 radio telescopes in Chile,it has been studying SN 1987A,one of the most studied objects in recent times.SN 1987A is only about 170,000 light years from Earth,so is right next door.Within SN 1987A,a neutron star, the densest object in the universe, has been ascertained that is also a pulsar, the twin bursts of energy coming out of each end being detected as pulses.*Cosmology is the study of the origin, evolution and structures of the universe.*space observatories

Io-like volcanic moon may have been discovered orbiting exoplanet WASP-4b - YouTube - Space.com - planetary science

Scientists believe they may have discovered a volcanic exomoon orbiting the exoplanet WASP-4b 635 light years from Earth (right next door). The discovery was made at the European Southern Observatory's 3.6 m/11.81 ft telescope at La Silla,Chile.A large cloud of sodium gas, typical of volcanic eruptions, was observed near the exoplanet.Although we lack the technology to observe exomoons directly, their existance can be ascertained by deduction.*Credits:NASA/Jet Propulsion Laboratory-California Institute of Technology
