How Supernovas Act as Universe’s Largest Particle Accelerators - YouTube - PBS Space Time - astrophysics

In 1912,Victor Hess discovered cosmic rays, ascertaining their non-solar origin, and received a Nobel Prize for this a few decades later. Most cosmic rays come from supernovae.Enrico Fermi discovered how shock waves can send particles out at vastly higher speeds than the waves themselves travel at.A shock wave is a tsunami of both charged particles and magnetic field.Shock waves can accelerate particles to a large fraction of the speed of light.Cosmic rays are detected by the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina and by the ISS Cosmic Ray Energetics And Mass (CREAM) detector.*Dr.Matt O'Dowd is an Australian astrophysicist and presenter and writer or co-writer of PBS Space Time.

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS captured in amazing time-lapse from space - YouTube - Space.com - planetary science

Like all comets,Tsuchinshan-Atlas (c2023 a3) originated as a planetesimal in the Oort Cloud in the early years of the solar system. Some planetesimals coalesced to form planets, while others are dwarf planets or comets. The Oort cloud is a theoretical construct devised by the Dutch astronomer Jan Oort in 1950 as the origin of comets. It hasn't been directly observed for lack of adequate technology. It is a vast cloud of icy planetesimals surrounding the Sun at distances ranging from 2,000 to 200,000 astronomical units (0.03-3.3 light years) and is in interstellar space.Planetesimals formed the four terrestrial planets:Mercury,Venus,Earth and Mars.We don't yet know if Tsuchinsan-ATLAS will be visible to the naked eye.Credit:NASA Commander Matthew Dominick photographed the comet from the ISS.

NASA's SpaceX Crew-9 Crew Arrival at NASA Kennedy Space Center - YouTube

NASA Commander Nick Hague and Roscosmos Mission Specialist Aleksandr Gorbunov arrived at NASA Kennedy Space Center on 21 SEPT 2024 to make final preparations for their launch from the new Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station no sooner than 26 SEPT 2024.They have a special responsibility in that they will rescue NASA Astronauts Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita "Sunni" Williams from the ISS as their Boeing CST-100 Starliner space craft was deemed unsafe for their return to Earth. The rescue will be in February 2025.The new launch site will give NASA more flexibility over having just the one facility for human spaceflight at NASA Kennedy Space Center,Space Launch Complex 39a.

NASA streams 4K video from plane to space station and back via laser for 1st time - YouTube - Space.com

NASA advanced technology:For the first time,a NASA Pilatus PC-12 aircraft with a portable laser transmitter transmitted 4K video from the aircraft to the ISS and back.Laser communications use infrared light to transmit 10-100 more data faster than radio frequency systems, according to NASA.This is especially important for crewed deep space missions to the Moon and Mars.*Text by Space.com and edited by Andrew Taylor

Northern Lights spotted over Atlanta area, north Georgia Friday evening - 11 Alive TV Atlanta - heliopyhsics

G5 Coronal Mass Ejection results in spectacular aurora displays in Georgia USA Power grid:the power grid today is more resilient than it was during Quebec's 9 hour blackout in 1989.Mitigation meausures were put in place as soon as our grid opeators were notified of the GS.Being in Low Earth Orbit, they are somewhat protected by the Earth's magnetic field. Astronauts and Cosmonauts:NASA says the ISS crew is safe and doesn't need to hide in their designated shelters at this time. Satellites:satellites in Low Earth Orbit are slowed down by such events and could experience some problems affecting communications and navigation.

Space to Ground: Outside the Hatch: April 26, 2024 - NASA Johnson Space Center

Roscosmos Cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chubb conducted a spacewalk in which they installed a panel of a synthetic radar system on the Aoka module and an experiment that tests corrosion on the Poist module. The MISSE-18-NASA experiment exposes materials to the harshness of space to test them for uses on the Gateway lunar space station or lunar surface and a coating that could help prevent salt corrosion at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station before launch.A medical experiment tests magnetic nanoparticles that may kill melanoma skin cancer cells. Finally,SpaceX Crew-8 astronauts suited up to move their Crew Dragon spacecraft to another port to make way for the Boeing Crew Flight Test Starliner spaccraft.

2024 Total Solar Eclipse News Conference

The Parker Solar Probe will get very close to the sun and gather data on the eclipse never possible before.A NASA WB-40 aircraft will also gatger unique data as it chases the eclpse, getting an extra two minutes of totality.Astronauts aboard the ISS will gather data from a unique perspective, seeing the shadow of the Moon on the Earth.A NOAA satellite will study the effect of the eclipse on the ionosphere. An eclipse was used to confirm Albert Einstein's General Theory of Relativity by observing gravitational lensing, the bending of starlight around the curvature of spacetime.NASA TV will provide live coverage of the eclipse from 1-4 pm EDT on 8 April 2004 and this blog intends to cover it.If you can't watch it live, you should be able to see a recorded version of it as well later on.
