Asia This Day:China,Japan,Australia
There's no doubt that we have to be relevant across the world, said Alex Malley,CEO of CPA Australia. In Australia at the moment, the politics are dramatic, but they're not good for the country. The whole world rests on integration with China. One of the sleeping giants is in agriculture and professional services for China.*Chinese industrial profits slipped from a 12.3% increase in May to an 11.1% increase in June. The causes include a slowdown in sales and rising materials costs.*Japanese consumer prices rose at their highest pace year over year since November 2008,a sign of inflation and economic recovery after two decades of deflation.*Asian markets will be responding this week to more Chinese and Japanese economic data,as well as a meeting of India's central bank.*China's move to a more consumer-based economy from rapid infrastructure development has repercussions for mining and mining services concerns.*China and the EU avoided a trade war Saturday by reaching a deal on imports of Chinese solar panels.*The MSCI Asia Pacific index was down 0.71% in early Monday trading.*CPA Australia has more than 144,000 members in 127 countries. It provides education, training, tech support and advocacy for its members, representing the accounting profession to all levels of government, regulators, academe, industry and the general public.

Keck Medicine Acquires Verdugo Hills Hospital
Keck Medicine of USC has expanded with the acquisition of Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale,California.Effective July 16,the purchase integrates the 158-bed local hospital into the constellation of Keck Medicine world-class medical institutions, which include the Keck School of Medicine;Keck Hospital of USC;and USC Norris Cancer Hospital,as well as USC Care Medical Group and other assets.
Verdugo Hills Hospital has served the Foothill communities of Los Angeles County for 40 years. It offers a primary stroke center;cardiac rehabilitation;diagnostic/imaging services;and a maternity department.
According to Tom Jakiewicz,President of USC Health, this was the right move for both organisations, particularly in light of the changes that are transforming health care and how it's delivered.Bringing together these two very strong provider communities creates a unique opportunity for residents of the Foothill communities to receive exceptional patient care from the physicians they know and trust, and from those who bring additional medical expertise from one of the world's leading academic medical centers.
The realities of health care reform are feeding a national trend of consolidation of health care providers into large networks,in a quest to achieve greater efficiency and better clinical outcomes for patients, with an eye to reducing costs.
Len LaBella,CEO of USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, added that the affiliation enables us to provide key services and advantages that not only help us remain viable, but to thrive in a challenging health care environment that demands constant evolution.
Cosmetic improvements such as new signage, better landscaping and refurbished interiors have already been achieved since the deal closed-the first of many steps of the integration.

Microsoft's Troubled Road
The declining PC business matters, according to Dan Niles,co-Chief Investment Officer at asset manager AlphaOne Capital Partners.Enterprise is still tied to the PC business.Microsoft missed estimates in all five revenue segments. The problem is,you're gonna have more tablets sold than PCs in Q4.
Microsoft is a great cash flow business. It's a software company, but it's on the wrong side of the market. It has a good quarter mixed in here and there.Until they figure out how to have a strong smart phone and tablet, they're on the wrong side of a business transition.
Google is in a good spot with Android.Eventually, this mobile transition will run its course. For Microsoft, you need stabilisation in the PC market. In 2-3 years from now,you might reconsider the stock.
Mr.Niles,Senior Portfolio Manager of the AlphaOne Satori Fund, has a negative position in both Microsoft and Google.
Microsoft is currently undergoing a restructuring,in an attempt to better navigate the shifting business landscape.

What Bernanke's Testimony Means
The stock market is at all-time highs, but markets tend to seize on what they want to hear and run with it.A case in point is Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's testimony before Congress last week, which was assessed by Mohmamed El-Erian,CEO of leading asset manager PIMCO.This testimony is rather dovish,Mr.El-Erian said.Bernanke was saying that 1.The unemployment situation is unsatisfactory.2.Don't worry about inflation;it is too low.3.We have a number of instruments we can use.
He's trying to strike a difficult balance between confidence and excessive risk-taking.The journey is full of ifs.The market extrapolates this to the destination.Markets are different from the Fed.They want to know where we are going, and when we're going to get there.1.The unaddressed cost and risk of unconventional policies.2.You've convinced other central banks to follow you,but does it make sense if everybody does it?
The underlying economy is still fragile. The fundamentals with the technicals would call for lower yields from here.1.The real economy is weak.2.Banks have reduced risk exposure,so their ability to earn is less.It will be interesting to see how sustainable their earnings are.
Mr.El-Erian,who formerly managed the Harvard endowment, is also co-Chief Investment Officer of PIMCO,along with founder Bill Gross.
