On the eve of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Europe by the D-Day invasion, the President of the United States reflected on a number of controversies in Europe today, and also on the release of a US soldier,Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl,by Taliban militants in Afghanistan. We are at a point where Mr.Putin has a chance to get back in the lane of international law, said President Barack Obama at a Thursday press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron in Brussels,Begium. If Mr.Putin takes those steps,it is possible for us to begin to rebuild trust. The fact that some Russian troops have withdrawn from the Ukrainian border does not mean we can afford three or four or six months of drift.
I have no doubt I'll be seeing President Putin at the D-Day observances. He and I have always had a businesslike relationship.I will be delivering the same message:Russia has a legitimate interest, but it's up to the people of Ukraine to make its own decision. The destabilising actions we now see, funded and encouraged by Russia, are unacceptable. If he continues undermining the sovereignty and integrity of Ukraine,we will have no choice but to impose more sanctions,Mr.Obama indicated.*
On the issue of Scotland possibly leaving the United Kingdom,he noted that, from the outside at least,it looks as if the UK-Scotland union has worked pretty well, but ultimately that is for the people of Scotland to decide. As to Britain possibly leaving the European Union,it's important for us to know that Great Britain has a seat at the table of the larger European project. It's hard for me to imagine that project would go well without Great Britain.I'm sure the people of Great Britain will make the right decision.*
I'm never surprised by controversies that are whipped up in Washington, the President continued. We had a prisoner of war whose health had deteriorated, and we had an opportunity and we seized it,and I make no apologies for that. This basic principle that we don't leave anybody behind dates back to the beginning of the Republic. As Commander in Chief,I am responsible for these kids.I write too many letters to folks who don't get to see their children again. We don't condition whether we make the effort to get someone back, the President explained.*

Resilient Markets Recover From Ukraine Drop
World markets turned positive in Asia and Europe Tuesday, convinced there won't be military clashes anytime soon over the Ukraine crisis. The Nikkei went up 0.47 and the Hong Seng rose 0.70,optimistic that a standoff in Crimea will not escalate today as Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered Russian troops to halt their exercises in Western Russia and return to base, although there is no sign of an end to the crisis, either.
US Secretary of State John Kerry departed for Kiev talks with Ukraine's interim government Monday night, raising hopes of diplomatic progress.
US stock futures followed suit, recovering most of Monday's losses,as did European indexes. The FTSE was up 1.05 as of time of publication, and the CAC rose 1.15,while the DAX climbed 0.75.The underlying sentiment in markets is bullish, and they are not going to let Ukraine end the trend unless there are further developments.
At the same time, gold and oil prices declined as traders' fears of a shooting war eased-at least momentarily.Gold was near a four month high at close of trading Monday.

Sochi Winter Olympics Medals;Hannah Kearney;Women's Slopestyle Final
Total medals at the Sochi Winter Olympics as of Sunday night:
1.Norway 7
2.Netherlands 4
2.USA 4
2.Canada 4
2.Russia 4
3.Austria 2
4.Germany 1
4.Poland 1
4.Switzerland 1
4.Slovakia 1
Norway also has the most gold medals(2).This does not include the women's slopestyle snowboarding medals for some reason, perhaps becuase they weren't official yet or just hadn't been tallied by presstime.*
This blog does not pick favourites. This is an unhelpful practice,as there is no reliable way to forecast an athlete's performance on just one day or even over an entire Games.Sometimes the favourites win at the Olympics;sometimes they do not.It is a pointless media exercise to speculate like that.
American freestyle skier Hannah Kearney, who won a bronze in Saturday's women's moguls final, felt a lot better about her bronze after the warmth of the medals ceremony, where Canadian sisters Justeine and Chloe Dufour-Lapointe were awarded the gold and silver, respectively.Kearney, who won gold in the event at Vancouver in 2010,had declared she was retiring after her defeat, but on Sunday said she now feels proud of the bronze and seemed open to reconsidering the decision to retire.*
Russia is back:the old Russian dominance of figure skating,in which they had won 51 medals, and which ended at Vancouver when they were shut out of the medals, got a new lease on life as Russia took the first gold in the new team figure skating event.Seasoned veteran Yevgeny Plushenko,31,and newcomer Yulia Lipnitskaya,15,skated without obvious flaws to secure the top spot as President Vladimir Putin looked on,basking in their success.Canada won silver and the US took the bronze.*
Team USA completed its sweep of the first gold medals in the new snowboard slopestyle event as Sage Kotsenburg was joined by Jamie Anderson,23,of South Lake Tahoe,California.Anderson earned her gold as she impressed with big air, soaring above the huge manufactured slopes of the course.
Finland's Enni Rukajarvi garnered silver, and Great Britain's Jenny Jones,33,reached a milestone for her country with her bronze, the first ever medal for GB in a snow sport.

Singh,Putin Focus On Terrorism;Pakistani PM in Washington
The focus of Monday's meeting between Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Russian President Vladimir Putin was on terrorism and those who are not vigilant enough about it on their territory,i.e.,Pakistan,even as Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is on a four day visit to Washington.Following their talks, the two leaders strongly condemned countries that tolerate terrorists within their borders.States that provide aid, abetment and shelter for such terrorist activities are themselves as guilty as the actual perpetrators of terrorism. They need to irreversibly shut down terrorist networks, organisations and infrastructure, and show tangible movement in investigating and bringing quickly to justice those responsible for acts of terrorism.*
Singh and Putin expressed opposition to Pakistan's attempts to rehabilitate Taliban militants, and concern about Afghanistan's future post-2014,when NATO and coalition forces will have largely departed the war-torn country.Anti-Taliban sanctions should be maintained, the Indian and Russian leaders agreed. The sides considered it necessary to extend the sanctions regime introduced by the UN Security Council against the Taliban as one of the most important tools of fighting terrorism. They also said the Mumbai attacks were acts of terror whose perpetrators must be brought to book-referring to Lashkar-e-Tayibba in Pakistan, whose efforts to arrest and try the militants are seen to be anemic by Russia and India.*
Agreement on the building of units 3 and 4 at the Kudankula nuclear power plant on India's southern coast was not ready for signing at the meeting between Singh and Putin.India has enacted tough new safety requirements in light of the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011.
Even as Putin and Singh were meeting,Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was in Washington for four days of high level talks with US officials, including President Barack Obama on Wednesday,as well as Secretary of State John Kerry and Members of Congress. It is the third meeting between Sharif and Kerry in the last three months;it continued the robust dialogue on our shared goal of a stable, secure and prosperous Pakistan, the State Department said.*
Mr.Sharif tried to draw the US into the Kashmir territorial dispute between Pakistan and India while he was in London, describing it as a nuclear flashpoint. The US rebuffed him, however, saying Kashmir was strictly a matter for the two South Asian nations to resolve among themselves.*
The US has quietly resumed military and economic aid to Pakistan in recent days, following a period of tension after the unauthorised US raid and killing of Osama bin Laden on Pakistani territory in May 2011,as well as a US drone strike that mistakenly killed two dozen Pakistani troops in November 2011.*

Asia This Day:Billabong Gets New Bid;Putin in India
Major central banks have been injecting liquidity into the market. We think we're gonna see major buying of the Australian dollar, driving it up to 1.11,said Todd Elmer of Citigroup.
Billabong International has received a takeover bid of A527 million dollars/US554 million from Sycamore Partners and Paul Naude. The Australian apparel group had cut its earnings forecast by up to 49% on weaker than expected holiday sales and restructuring costs.
Australian Minister of Trade Craig Emerson said the country's budget surplus should return by 2014.Although it would be unlikely,a surplus could possibly happen as early as 2013 if household spending continues to improve. There are good signs in car sales, the housing market and the retail industry.
The Labour government had originally promised to achieve a budget surplus in 2013,but has just revised the pledge to 2014,based on a shortfall in tax revenue because of global economic weakness, lower commodity prices and a higher Australian dollar.
The ASX 200 index closed at 4635.20,up 0.25% in shortened Christmas Eve trading.Australian stocks are at their highest valuation in 17 months, but trading volume was extremely light-off 70% in the pre-holiday session.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is on a one day trip to India.India is Russia's leading arms customer and Mr.Putin will sign 7 billion dollars in arms deals on his visit, including outright purchases and joint development plans. The Nifty Fifty stock index rose 0.48% in early Monday trading.

Exxon Mobil's Access Challenge
Demand has certainly been sluggish, off 2-2.5%,Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson observed.Globally, demand is about where we expected it to be.Part of what we're seeing is,the supply fundamentals are very strong now.
Our move into XTO Energy was recognition on our part of how significant unconventional resources are.We have to go out, have access to acreage and drill so we can support the economy. We spend in operating costs over a billion dollars a day.
Two-thirds of the remaining oil and 40% of natural gas lies under federal land we have no access to.The key issue is,the government controls access.
All we're looking for is tax treatment that's equal across all industries.Loopholes and subsidies are patches to fix a defect in the tax system.Let's clean all that up.
I'm not as optimistic as I was six months ago.I think the economy is gonna be sluggish in this country.Globally,we're gonna have positive growth, but it's not gonna be as robust as we had hoped.
Other governments also control access to resources. The difference is,they ask how can we get this drilling done,Rex Tillerson remarked bitterly.
Exxon Mobil recently signed an agreement with Russian oil titan Rosneft on a joint venture for exploration and production in Russia and globally. The Strategic Cooperation Agreement was signed on August 30 in Sochi,Russia in the presence of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Mr.Tillerson.The two companies have been working together for at least 15 years.
