Stocks Crater on Greece Fears

The S&P 500 Index fell 43.85 on Monday, down 2.09%,on worries that Greece might leave the Euro-zone,or might at least cause unfortunate ripple effects throughout the global economy. The country is expected to miss a Tuesday debt payment of 1.84 billion dollars to the IMF.Technically, that would not be a default, since the IMF payment does not have the status of a bond coupon payment, for instance.Still,it is plenty bad for the stock market,as is the unknown endpoint of Greece's tortured negotiations with its creditors, and the Sunday referendum basically on whether Greece should abandon the euro for its old currency, the drachma.
The run on Greek banks could become contagious, spreading to Spain,Portugal and even Italy. If that happens, the US economy, with its close ties to Europe, could suffer as well.
The market was shaken by S&P's opinion that the probability of the so-called Grexit is 50%,and a commercial default is inevitable within six months.Greece's credit rating was also lowered by S&P to CCC-.
Investors sought refuge in gold, which rose 0.52%,while Treasury bonds were basically flat and utility stocks fell less than the broader market.*

Asia This Day:China Wants More Godiva Chocolate

Godiva Chocolatier Inc. plans to open 15 new stores this year in China. The privately held firm has a goal of expanding to about 100 stores there over the next 3-4 years.Ding Shuang,Senior Economist at Citigroup, said industrial data from China wasn't as bad as expected.Growth has stabilized, although at a very low level. We have an estimate that GDP may fall to the 7-7.5 range for Q2.The interest rate cut last week is a very strong signal of more easing ahead by the central bank.We think they may have to cut the rate again to arrest the downward trend of growth. It is quite volatile, and policy is very much needed to stabilize growth,Mr.Ding believes.Asian shares opened higher Monday morning on optimism about China and the Spanish request for a 125 billion dollar bailout. It's not a bailout,Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy insisted;it's a loan to stabilize the financial system.China's exports rose 15.3%,more than doubling the estimate.Consumer prices were below target for the fourth straight month, rising 3% versus an estimate of 4%.Passenger vehicle sales were up 22.6%.China will revive its cash for clunkers program to keep the car business rolling.Spain's Telefonica is selling half of its stake in China Unicom, unloading the shares for 11 dollars apiece, while China is buying up cheap oil for its strategic petroleum reserve. This is affecting the global market, driving the price of oil up the most in five months-along with renewed hope because of the Euro-zone help for Spain. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index rose 1.76% on the news in early Monday trading, while the Indian Nifty Fifty gained 1.05%.China Unicom Ltd.(CHU),Citigroup(C),Telefonica SA ADR(TEF)

MF Global:2011 Prospects For Investors

John Brady,Senior Vice-President at MF Global, says you're seeing capital go out of bond funds and into stock funds. He really thinks it's been about a repositioning trade,a rotation trade, getting cash off the balance sheet and back into the market.
The refinancing schedule for Spain and Italy really picks up next year.Investors want to be very concerned then about what takes place in the Euro-zone.
Perhaps inflation and monetary policy in China will affect the market in 2011,increasing global market volatility.
Mr.Brady still thinks it's gonna be a slow, long recovery in the employment market.
MF Global is a brokerage offering customized solutions, providing its clients global access to more than 70 securities and futures exchanges,as well as OTC markets. It has offices worldwide, from New York to London and Dubai.

Rogers Reports

Investor Jim Rogers of Rogers Holdings, who recently moved to Singapore, notes that real estate has been down in Asia,on account of Westeners not coming there as much as they had been. There was too much speculation in China, but China and Taiwan have the best markets now, while there is a slowdown in the U.K.,the Netherlands and Spain. The U.S. recession will be worse than expected, but he's been hearing about an oil bubble since it was 3.00 U.S. a barrel. There has been no major oil field discovery in 40 years. There is no production of commodities.Three billion people in Asia want to live as the West does, and now they're working very hard. They have huge ambition and drive. It's a world that used to exist in America and Europe. It's astonishing,Mr.Rogers observed.
