Pharma Titan Pfizer Shuts Down Neuroscience Division

Pfizer, the world's largest pharmaceutical company, has decided to close its neuroscience-discovery and early development programmes, the company announced Saturday. That means it is halting research in nine projects, including some for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, resulting in the loss of around 300 jobs in Massachusetts and Connecticut.*
To be candid,an internal review concluded the results just weren't materialising as had been hoped. The company said:
This was an exercise to re-allocate spend across those areas where our pipeline, and our expertise,is strongest.*
The move is a blow to those suffering from these devastating illnesses and their caregivers. At the same time, however,Pfizer, which is headquartered in New York, says it will soon invest in a new venture capital fund to stimulate research in such neurological conditions, and will continue to seek treatments for rare illnesses.*

Federal Judge Nixes Allergan Patents - blockbuster drug may be copied now

A US district judge for Eastern Texas,William Bryson, has tossed out Allergan's patents on its blockbuster dry eye treatment Restasis, which has been marketed by a long-running TV commercial campaign. The judge said the patents were based on obvious ideas. He additionally disliked Allergan's attempt to shield the patents by transferring the rights to the St.Regis Mohawk Indian tribe in New York State last month-a move Members of Congress have also criticised.Allergan's rivals have been seeking the ruling, led by Mylan NV and Teva Pharmaceutical Industries.*
The ruling may clear the way for other drugmakers to produce generic versions of Restasis.*
Last year,Restasis generated 10% of Allergan's revenue and 15% of its profits. The company, through its chief legal officer,Robert Bailey, said it was disappointed in the decision and was considering all of its options.*
As of time of publication,Allergan was down 3.51%;Teva had dropped 1.84%;while Mylan rose 0.59%.*

MedImmune and 3M Partner in Cancer Drug Research

MedImmune, the biotech subsidiary of British pharma titan AstraZeneca, and 3M Drug Delivery Systems announced a research collaboration on 25 September 2015.It is focused on developing nextgen toll-like receptor agonists, which are agents that activate innate immune cells and enhance the visibility of cancer tumours.MedImmune has licensed MEDI9197 from 3M,which the US FDA recently accepted for an investigational drug application, allowing a Phase I study on its safety and tolerability as a potential treatment for solid tumour patients.*
Such TLR agonists activate antigen presenting cells such as dendritic cells, enhancing the visibility of a tumour to the immune system.MEDI9197 has been designed to activate a broad range of innate immune cells, leading to a more robust adaptive immune response.
Preclinial studies show MEDI9197 may inhibit tumour growth of both the injected and distant lesions in multiple types of cancer, including melanoma skin cancer. It is designed for intratumoural injection, allowing the compound to be retained in the tumour and provide specific immune activation, enhancing its safety and tolerability.*
MEDI9197 adds a unique mechanism to our growing portfolio, and supports our strategy of maximising anti-tumour immunity through scientifically rational combinations, said MedImmune Sr. Vice President and Head of Research Yong-Jun Liu,PhD.*
Everyone here at 3M's Drug Delivery Systems is very excited to collaborate with MedImmune,a world leader in cancer immunotherapy, according to Cindy Kent,President and General Manager of 3M DDS.We're very pleased with the progression of MEDI9197 to the clinic.*
Under the deal,MedImmune will be responsible for the clinical development and strategy for MEDI9197.3M will continue to develop more TLR agonists in oncology and other therapy areas, with MedImmune holding exclusive rights to conduct research on new molecules resulting from the collaboration, and to determine which to progress to clinical development.
MedImmune will make an upfront payment to 3M and must make developmental milestone payments for MEDI9197,as well as provide research funding to 3M.*
MedImmune is based in Gaithersburg,Maryland and is best known for its Flu-Mist influenza vaccines and its pediatric vaccine Synagis, which prevents the serious respiratory disease RSV.3M is a Saint Paul,Minnesota-based multinational corporation with 11 lines of business. It is famous for products such as the iconic Scotch Tape and Post-It Notes.*

Drug Companies Swap Units,Join Forces

Two pharma titans,GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis, are entering into a complex 25 billion dollar transaction.Novartis, based in Geneva,Switzerland,is buying GSK's oncology unit for 14.5 billion dollars;at the same time,Britain's GSK is buying Novartis' vaccine unit. Finally, the two firms are forming a joint venture that combines their over the counter drug businesses.
Today we announced we are focusing on our pharmaceutical, eye care, and generics businesses, said Novartis CEO Joseph Jimenez. We're gonna add probably one billion people on earth, and 50% of them will be over 50.It's gonna take innovation to deal with it.We've got these powerhouses that fit exactly with the demographic changes for the next 20 years-for example,GSK's two drugs for metastatic melanoma.
I believe increased technology is gonna allow new targets in cancer that we've never seen before. We're at the beginning of having new tools to combat this disease like never before. This deal with GSK changes the financial profile of Novartis, increasing our operating margin significantly. The whole portfolio review was to allow us to have great strength in that new world.I'll be able to feed these big engines a lot more. We're generating better leverage than we have in the past, explained Mr.Jiminez, who is an American.*
In addition,Novartis is selling its animal health business to Eli Lilly.Even when the deal with GSK is completed,Novartis will still be open to more bolt-on acquisitions that benefit its three lines of business.*

Who Makes Desenex Foot Powder-and is it any good

Desenex(R) is an antifungal agent made by Novartis Consumer Health,a division of Swiss pharmaceutical titan Novartis. It consists of undecylenic acid/zinc undecylenate,as well as talc and fragrance.Undecylenic acid/zinc undecylenate is a clinically validated antifungal agent for the treatment and cure of superficial fungus infections of the skin, including athlete's foot, jock itch and ringworm. It is not for treatment of the nails or hairy areas.
Desenex is not recommended for children under two, pregnant women or diabetics and others with blood vessel problems without first consulting a physician. It is also available in spray powder and cream forms. In my experience,it is a fast-acting,effective over the counter medication when used according to directions.
Other Novartis Consumer Health brands include Bufferin;Theraflu;and Doan's.

Biotech Firm Dismisses GlaxoSmithKline Offer

Rockville,Maryland biotech firm Human Genome Sciences has rejected a 13 dollar a share bid by British pharma titan GlaxoSmithKline, with whom it has a partnership in the promotion of lupus drug Benlysta. The offer is inadequate, the company says in a letter to shareholders, because it doesn't capture HGS' inherent value and growth opportunities.HGS listed one of these opportunities as Benlysta, which is not only a treatment for lupus;but shows promise for treating other autoimmune diseases as well. The initial market opportunity for Benlysta is approximately 7 billion dollars in the U.S. alone, the company says.HGS goes on to cite its robust pipeline of new products as underpinning its future prospects, including cardiovascular drug darapladib and diabetes treatment albiglutide. Its early stage pipeline includes potential cancer, autoimmune and Alzheimer's disease medications as well.Glaxo was opportunistically trying to purchase HGS at a low point of the company's share price,HGS said. The Board has authorized management to seek strategic alternatives such as sale to another party to increase HGS' shareholder value.Human Genome's financial advisors,Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs, both recommended against accepting the GSK offer as being inadequate. Focus on Pharma:Drugmaker Looks To Pipeline,Divestitures

In its recent earnings report,Pfizer, the world's largest pharmaceutical company, posted 6% profit growth on cost-cutting and share buybacks.Sales declined 5% on patent expirations of cholesterol drug Lipitor and others taking effect.
Despite the loss of patent protection,Pfizer isn't giving up promoting its cardiovascular blockbuster.Lipitor is still being marketed with a 4 dollar copay card and television advertising.Sales of the drug dropped 40% in Q4 when its patent expired. The company says it hasn't yet decided whether the ad campaign will continue long term.Liptior was advertised on television more than any other prescription drug last year.
Pfizer has promising new drugs in its pipeline, such as lung cancer treatment Xalkori, rheumatoid arthritis drug tofacitinib, and atrial fibrillation medicine Eliquis.
Eliquis was granted priority review by the Food and Drug Administration.Morninstar Associates projects an 80% chance of approval for the medicine, with a potential for 3 billion dollars in sales.Profits from it would be shared with Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Pfizer continues its aggressive cost-cutting,and is well on the way to its goal of 4 billion dollars annually. The company is expected to finalize the divestiture of its animal health and nutritional segments later in 2012.Morningstar values these businesses at 11 and 7 billion dollars, respectively, says Damien Conover,CFA,Associate Director at Morningstar.

A Successful Partnership:GlaxoSmithKline and Human Genome Sciences

British pharma titan GlaxoSmithKline is building on research carried out by Rockville,Maryland biotech firm Human Genome Sciences. Two of GSK's pipeline projects are based on HGS technology.
Darapladib is an inhibitor of the Lp-PLA2 enzyme, which is believed to be a risk factor for coronary heart disease and ischemic stroke. It is a potentially important new treatment for prevention of cardiovascular events. The candidate drug discovered by GSK using an HGS technology is in a Phase 3 trial for efficacy and safety of treatment.
Albiglutide is a biological product created by HGS and licensed by GSK IN 2004.It is designed to act throughout the body to help maintain blood glucose levels and control appetite. This potential long term treatment for type 2 diabetes is also in a Phase 3 trial.
HGS has a substantial financial interest in both of these GSK products which its research has had a formative influence on.
GlaxoSmithKline and Human Genome Sciences are also co-owners and developers of Benlysta, the first new lupus treatment approved in the U.S. in 50 years.

Novo Nordisk Takes the Lead

Denmark's Novo Nordisk has a 51% share of the insulin market. It is their core business. In diabetes, the patient lacks enough insulin,or insulin of sufficient quality,to ensure that sugar reaches the cells rather than destructively remaining in the bloodstream.Diabetes is growing at an alarming rate, observed Lars Soerenson,Novo's CEO,which sets Novo apart from the rest of the pharmaceutical industry.
Novo's Victoza, which is delivered by a pen-like device, has insulin market leadership. It has been rolled out globally. The main treatment is a hormone. It's a balance between very powerful drugs and too low of an insulin level.Designer insulins reduce this problem. And the side effect profile is much better with designer insulins.
With poor treatment,Mr.Soerenson indicates, diabetes causes amputations, blindness and kidney disease, among other complications. Not treating it is very costly to society.Victoza costs 5-10 dollars per treatment.
The market is on the third generation of insulins.Novo Nordisk is in the lead now with the first new generation of designer insulins,Mr.Soerenson feels.
