Johnson and Johnson Heiress Dies in Poland

Barbara Piasecka Johnson, heiress to the vast Johnson and Johnson fortune, has died in Wroclaw,Poland where she grew up.She was 76 and had been seriously ill for some time.A degreed art historian,Mrs.Johnson was born in Staniewicze,Poland in 1937,an area now a part of Belarus.
After World War II,her family resettled in Wroclaw.Mrs.Johnson fled communist Poland in the late 1960s.After briefly studying in Rome, she emigrated to the United States with a hundred dollars in her pocket and not a word of English.J.Seward Johnson,Sr.,heir to the Johnson and Johnson health care company fortune, hired her as a maid and cook at his Oldwick,New Jersey estate.
A year later,Barbara left to study art at New York University.Mr.Johnson provided her with a Manhattan apartment, which he moved into with her.He divorced his second wife in 1971 and married Barbara, several decades his junior.
Following Mr.Johnson's death of prostrate cancer in 1983,her seven stepchildren contested the will in court, accusing her of being a manipulative gold digger. She denied the charge, saying Mr.Johnson disinherited the stepchildren because of their scandalous and disappointing behaviour.A settlement was reached in which she received about 300 million of the half billion dollar estate.
A woman of considerable beauty,Barbara made a name for herself as an art collector and philanthropist, eventually donating her art collection to her foundation for the benefit of the poor and sick, especially those with autism. She also achieved notoriety when she stepped in to rescue the famous Gdansk shipyard, base of the Solidarity movement that freed Poland from communism, from bankruptcy,an effort that ultimately proved unsuccessful.
Following her funeral Mass in Wroclaw cathedral on April 15,Barbara will be buried in that city, the girlhood home she never forgot.

Google's Size Problem

Google is the largest of the large, which makes trouble for the tech titan. You will have competitors complaining about Google, points out Harry First,Professor of Law at New York University and former head of the New York state anti-trust bureau. There is always the fear they're doing that to thwart a better competitor. This clearly is a concern for Google.
Google does have some monopoly power. You can build a successful business and continue to build it as long as you do it properly. They just can't exclude competitors.
Ohio,Wisconsin and Texas are questioning Google.States may take Google to court. These states try to incentivize the federal government to do so as well.
Google is a very aggressive company.Clearly it's in the hot seat all over the world. They reach out and try to explain what they're doing,Professor First noted.
Google's attorneys have been busy in Europe, trying to fend off accusations by Microsoft and others that they have an unfair lead in search advertising. If the accusations get to a formal investigative stage,it may be difficult to stop the case, since the authorities then have a vested interest in achieving something with it,justifying the expense of the investigation.

Investment Prospects:Intel Corporation

In the opinion of Doug Freedman,Tech Analyst at Gleacher&Company Securities, the Intel earnings numbers were solid, beating estimates on both the top and bottom lines. He has a buy rating on the stock. There really is the ability for Intel to spend an extra two billion dollars this year and raise the dividend as well.
To Scott Galloway,Professor of Marketing at New York University,Intel continues to be organizationally a great company, but the stock is where it was 10 years ago. They continue to attract human capital and have a great cash flow.
Intel has all the marks of a company that could break out.The brand is very extendable-into tech education, for example.Intel has almost become commoditized,Professor Galloway thinks.
Intel says its Atom chips will appear in a wide array of tablets and mobile phones this year. Its capital expenditures will be used to operate four leading-edge plants.

Geithner At NYU:Comeback Confidence

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner expressed confidence in the nation's future at NYU's Stern School of Business recently.Mr.Geithner feels that America is coming back;the economy is healing.Typically, recoveries following a crisis are more moderate. You always face more headwinds.Businesses are starting to hire, but the U.S. needs to bring the fiscal deficit down.Economic growth needs confidence that the U.S. will cut debt. This debt reduction will be a difficult process.
We're seeing more stability in house prices, but we still have a lot to work through. The system we have today is not tenable for the future.Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac built up huge portfolios of mortgage-backed securities without the capital to back up the risk.
The government still has substantial capacity to respond to a future crisis,Mr.Geithner said, wearing a black suit, blue shirt and blue tie.He did not believe the U.S. is headed for Japanese-style deflation. Most countries wait too long to respond to crises. The President made it clear we were not gonna do that.We decided to act with force. The major firms are in a much stronger position because we forced them to disclose and raise more capital.Because of that, the world turned and the basic beginnings of recovery began.Mr.Geithner is very confident we're gonna avoid the Japanese fate.
