NASA Discusses Upcoming Artemis Crew Missions (Jan. 09, 2024) - starts at 5:17
New Timetable for Artemis Crewed Missions:Artemis II - September 2025;Artemis III Lunar landing:September 2026
Why:Analysis of Artemis I data brought certain potential flaws to NASA's attention.Specifically,1.A small amount of charring that they hadn't expected occurred on the Orion heat shield, and they need to work through that to be comfortable with crew safety.2.A circuit issue with the life support system needs to be worked through.3.An issue with the launch abort system was identified and needs to be resolved.4.SpaceX has had setbacks with its Starship spacecraft, which is to serve as the lunar lander for the Artemis III astronauts. They need more time to process the issues and will do an uncrewed test with Starship landing on the Moon and then returning to Earth. The first priority is astronaut safety. We're not going till we're ready,NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said.He doesn't think China will get astronauts to the Moon first.NASA and its industry partners are comfortable with the new schedule.
